Players challenge each other to change places on the ladder. Ladder challenges may take place all year around. Between 31st March and 15th October each year any position may be challenged from any position. From 16th October to 30th March a challenge may be made for a maximum of four places above the challengers position or may be made for a maximum oftwo places above the challengers position in his/her own age group. (Amended 21 February 2011) All players who are affiliated to a club are eligible to both be on the ladder and to represent the province. These players do not have to play tennis on a regular basis for their club. New entrants are allowed to join the ladder at the bottom of their age groups or to join the ladder by way of an open challenge. A challenge must be for 16s and 14s the best of three sets for 12s the best of three sets with the third set tiebreaker for 10s best of 17 games (first to win 9 games) To keep the ladder rankings current, all matches that satisfy 5 above will be regarded as ladder challenges at the following tournaments Taranaki Junior Open (Labour Weekend), Taranaki Primary Schools, Taranaki Open (Hawera) and North and South Grand Prix Tournaments. And results will be used to change ladder position from any position on the ladder. In the under 10 age group the Stratford tournament will also count as challenges. A successful challenge will see the winning player take the position immediately above the losing player. Every challenge must be lodged with the ladder controller and played within 7 days. (Any challenge not registered with the ladder controller will not be recognised.) The challenger must provide new Wilson tennis balls for the challenge. The challenger must also provide an umpire if requested by the player being challenged. The result must be conveyed to the ladder controller within 24 hours of the match being played. If the challenger loses, a re-challenge cannot be made within fourteen days of the date that the first challenge was played. The challenge is to be played at the challenged players club courts. (Or at any club court by mutual agreement). Any player who refuses a challenge or is not available for a challenge will be deemed to have defaulted. The player who defaults will take the place on the ladder directly below the challenger. The decision of the ladder controller, who will use their discretion in the event of weather or illness interfering with a challenge match, or when a dispute arises, is final. Parental interference or sideline coaching is not permitted. Any disputes, problems or queries are to be referred to the ladder controller, whose decision is final. Once challenged, the challengee has the right to place his/her own challenge against another player before accepting another challenge.
